West Coast Karate Athletes Represent Australia at Thailand Open
West Coast Karate is proud to congratulate Hannah Sullivan and Nathaniel Cowey on representing Australia at the 2026 Thailand Open Karate Tournament, held in Bangkok from 14–16 August 2026.
The Thailand Open attracted many of the region’s strongest karate athletes, providing an important international competition in the lead-up to the World Karate Federation World Championships later this year.
Hannah Sullivan Claims Gold for Australia
West Coast Karate’s Hannah Sullivan delivered another outstanding international performance, winning the Gold Medal in the Senior Women’s +68 kilogram Kumite division.
The victory continues Hannah’s exceptional run of success on the international stage and further strengthens her position as one of Australia’s leading female karate athletes.
Her Gold Medal performance demonstrated the composure, technical skill and determination that have become hallmarks of her competition career. Competing against quality international opposition, Hannah displayed excellent tactical awareness and fighting spirit throughout the tournament to stand on top of the podium representing Australia.
This latest success adds to an already impressive list of achievements that includes selection for the World Games, the FISU World University Combat Sports Championships, the Karate World Cup and the Australian National Team.
Valuable International Experience for Nathaniel Cowey
Fifteen-year-old Nathaniel Cowey also proudly represented Australia at the Thailand Open, continuing his rapid development as one of the country’s most promising young karate athletes.
Competing internationally against experienced opponents provides invaluable experience for young athletes, and the Thailand Open formed an important part of Nathaniel’s preparation for the upcoming WKF World Junior, Cadet and Under 21 Championships, where he has been selected to represent Australia.
Nathaniel continues to demonstrate the dedication, work ethic and competitive spirit that have already earned him success at both national and international level.
Building Towards the World Championships
The Thailand Open provided an excellent opportunity for Australia’s athletes to gain valuable international competition before the upcoming World Karate Federation World Championships.
For Hannah, the tournament concluded with another international Gold Medal and valuable confidence heading into the Senior World Team Championships.
For Nathaniel, competing against quality international athletes provided further experience as he prepares to compete on the world stage for the first time.

West Coast Karate is extremely proud to have two athletes selected to represent Australia at international competition.
The achievements of Hannah and Nathaniel reflect years of commitment, disciplined training and the support of their families, coaches and teammates. Their success also demonstrates that a local Western Australian club can continue to develop athletes capable of competing with the very best in the world.
