West Coast Karate Athletes Selected to Represent Australia at Two World Karate Championships
West Coast Karate is proud to announce that two of its athletes, Hannah Sullivan and Nathaniel Cowey, have been selected to represent Australia at upcoming World Karate Federation (WKF) World Championships.
Their selection is another significant milestone for WCK and reflects years of dedication, disciplined training and outstanding performances at both national and international level.
Hannah Sullivan Continues to Lead Australian Karate
At just twenty-three years of age, Hannah Sullivan has established herself as one of Australia’s most successful female karate athletes and is widely recognised as the country’s leading competitor in the Senior Women’s +68 kilogram division.
Following an exceptional 2025 campaign, during which Hannah became the only female karate athlete selected to represent Australia at the World Games in Chengdu, China, she has continued to perform at the highest international level throughout 2026.
Her achievements this year include:
- Gold Medal – Australian Open (+68kg)
- Gold Medal – Western Australian State Championships (+68kg)
- Appointment as Captain of the 2026 Western Australian Karate Team
- Selection to represent Australia at the FISU World University Championship Combat Sports in Brasília, Brazil
- Selection as a member of the Australian Women’s Kumite Team for the Karate World Cup in Hangzhou, China
Hannah has now earned selection to represent Australia at the WKF Senior World Team Championships, where she will once again compete against many of the world’s strongest karate nations.
Her selection is recognition of her consistency, professionalism and determination to continually perform on the international stage.
Nathaniel Cowey Earns First World Championship Selection
Fifteen-year-old Nathaniel Cowey has rapidly established himself as one of Australia’s most exciting young karate athletes.
Over the past two years, Nathaniel has produced outstanding performances both in Australia and overseas, demonstrating the potential to compete with the very best junior athletes in the world.
His recent achievements include:
- Bronze Medal – WKF Asian Youth League, Hangzhou, China
- Bronze Medal – 2026 Australian Open
- Competitor at the Karate 1 Youth League, Manila, Philippines
These performances have now been rewarded with selection to represent Australia at the WKF World Junior, Cadet and Under 21 Championships, one of the most prestigious junior karate events in the world.
Competing at a World Championship is a significant achievement for any athlete, particularly at just fifteen years of age, and highlights Nathaniel’s enormous potential for the future.
A Proud Achievement for West Coast Karate
The simultaneous selection of Hannah and Nathaniel to represent Australia at two separate World Karate Federation World Championships is a remarkable achievement for West Coast Karate.
Although the club remains relatively small, it continues to produce athletes capable of competing successfully at the highest levels of international karate.
Head Instructor Brian Sullivan said the selections were a reflection of years of commitment from the athletes, their families and the coaching team.
